[Ended]Getting to Know Your Houseplants with UofT Sky Garden

January 18, 2020

Plants improve our indoor spaces by adding beauty and life, even through the winter. From ferns to cacti to small trees, a diverse range of species are cultivated as house plants. While indoor spaces are generally more benign and controlled than outdoors, growing plants inside presents a number of challenges – watering enough but not too much for a given pot size, providing sufficient light, and dealing with pests if they arise.

This workshop will cover general care of houseplants and aspects of plant physiology which make certain species (especially succulents) very low-maintenance and popular as houseplants. Some of the easiest species to care for are also very easy to propagate – we will cover how this is done. We will also use the diversity of indoor plants as a means to discuss plant diversity and evolutionary history in general. This workshop will include a giveaway of small houseplants, including sedums and other succulents and spider plants.

The Sky Garden is a volunteer-run rooftop vegetable garden at the University of Toronto. The garden features a lightweight model and serves as a teaching space for urban agriculture workshops. Run by volunteers with the aim of increasing local, organic food availability for the student community, the Sky Garden uses a network of lightweight, semi-hydroponic containers and a drip irrigation system to grow around 500lbs of vegetables each season.
