Cotton is a natural material with moisture absorbing moisture and heat generating characteristics. We've created our warm innerwear through a series of processes that enhance these traits.

Prevent static electricity

Because cotton is a material that does not easily pick up an electric charge, static electricity is rarely produced, even while wearing a knitted-wool fabric on top.

Prevent your skin from drying

Cotton does not absorb away your skin's natural oils as much as materials made of chemical fibers. It is a gentle fabric during the winter when the skin tends to get dry.

Gentle on the skin

We are always searching for the gentlest, most comfortable fit. To reduce any discomfort, we've removed the seams along the side. To prevent irritation caused by fabric care tags, we've sewn the tags on the outside for children and implemented a tag-less design for adults by printing directly onto the fabric.

Cotton is one MUJI's most precious natural resources. For more than 20 years, MUJI has been continuously working to increase the percentage of organic cotton used in apparel and is proud to say since 2018, all cotton material for garments has been organic.

MUJI believes a comfortable life is only achieved by using quality materials that are gentle on both the consumers and producers. For this reason, we have been continuously using organic cotton.

The cultivation of cotton requires great amounts of time and effort. In addition, the pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in cotton cultivation account for a quarter of the total worldwide usage. A significant amount persists in the soil, bringing tremendous negative impacts to the natural environment, producers and locals living in the vicinity. Organic cotton is cotton grown in soil that has remained free from the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers for at least 3 years, minimizing the impacts to environment and the people.

MUJI aspires to create products for a comfortable life. If we put the people responsible for producing the raw materials of our products at risk, we would have failed to live up to this vision. For this, we have been continuously working to increase the percentage of organic cotton used in the manufacturing of our cotton garments.

Since 2014, our product development team has been visiting the production areas of organic cotton around the world, and experiencing sowing and harvesting processes across different seasons. As our product development continues, we strive to learn more about the production process of organic cotton, acquaint ourselves with how important these raw materials are, and maintain healthy connections with the local producers. We were finally able to use organic cotton for all our cotton garments in 2018, and thus removed the labelling of “Organic Cotton” from our product names in 2019.

MUJI uses only organic cotton as the material for our cotton garments, and we will continue to create products which are simple but practical with consideration of the needs of users and producers.
