Discover the timeless craftsmanship of Ehime at MUJI for a limited time.

We’re excited to feature Ikazaki Shachu, a celebrated paper company from Uchiko-cho, Ehime, dedicated to preserving and reinventing the art of washi papermaking. Known for their expertise in washi paper, gilding, and wallpaper, Ikazaki Shachu masterfully blends traditional techniques with modern design, now available at Open MUJI.

Set against the backdrop of mountains and rivers, Ikazaki is famed for producing kozo and mitsumata—key ingredients in Japanese paper. At Ikazaki Shachu, designers fuse cutting-edge concepts with ancient motifs to craft truly one-of-a-kind washi paper.

Washi Postcard Gilding Workshop

In collaboration with Ikazaki Shachu

Discover the art of gilding, a technique that harnesses the natural oxidation and corrosion of metals like gold, copper, silver, and aluminum to create stunning colors and shimmering effects. When applied to washi paper, these metals bring the material to life, giving it an almost ethereal quality.

In this workshop, you’ll explore how this innovative technique enhances the beauty of washi. Create beautiful postcards using traditional washi paper and gilding techniques, and take home your very own personalized postcard!
