MUJI's Discovery: Fermented Rice Bran Skincare
While exploring natural cosmetic ingredients, MUJI found inspiration in rice bran, the nutrient-rich outer layer of brown rice, long cherished in Japan. Sourced from Yamagata Prefecture's "Tsuyahime" rice (packed with 7 vitamins and 8 minerals), the bran is pressed for oil at a Tendo City facility.
We focused on the defatted bran, a byproduct of chemical-free oil extraction so pure it’s edible. Fermented in Saitama Prefecture to boost amino acids, it took two years to perfect a process that removes alcohol while preserving skin-softening benefits. The result: our gentle, hydrating Rice Bran Fermented extract, featured in the new Booster Series.
