When it comes to shirt, it is one of the most representative daily wear items of MUJI. Since its first launch in 1983, MUJI has been striving to improve its shirt design in terms of materials, weaving method, interlining of collars, sleeves and buttons to satisfy customer needs. The continuous product improvement has brought to us today’s MUJI shirts, which are less prone to deformation with enhanced comfort.



Oxford Shirts for Work and Leisure

With over a hundred years of history, Oxford Shirts are a common find in any wardrobe. Made of organic cotton delicately handpicked, MUJI’s oxford shirts are soft and breathable with a clean design, fitting well as a shirt or as an outer. The natural texture is accompanied by different collar designs such as stand collar and button down for flexible daily coordination.

  • Washing Process The fabrics are pre-washed to bring out the great texture of organic cotton, for a rustic feel and natural comfort like a worn-in item.

Caring for the Environment and the Farmers

Organic cotton refers to cotton that has been grown on soil that has not been treated with chemical fertilizers or pesticides for at least three years. Aiming for farming that is sustainable and wholesome for the producers as well as the environment, at MUJI, we have been working to increase the percentage of organic cotton for more than 20 years. And as a result, nearly all of the cotton in our clothing comes from organic cotton.

At MUJI, using organic cotton for clothing has become something we naturally do rather than something extraordinary.

Our White Porcelain series features daily-use vessels handmade by craftsmen in the town of Hasami, with a simple design that complements all types of cuisine, distinguished by a slightly bluish and transparent white tinge. Produced in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, it is a region with a long tradition of white porcelain craftsmanship. Highly translucent Amakusa pottery stone are grounded into powder and kneaded into clay, then finished with traditional techniques that will withstand everyday use.

Each white porcelain item is crafted with careful consideration for timeless use. The two simple elements, "white" and "plain" were not combined accidentally, but instead were conscious choices, where the white became the background to showcase the splendour of decoration and colour.

Retaining ingredient's original colour, texture and flavour while improving food processing techniques, enjoy a variety of delicious snacks and food items at MUJI.

Satisfy sweet cravings and treat your sense of taste a run through memory lane with childhood favourites such as Watagashi (also known as a Japanese Cotton Candy) which uses brown sugar granules that exudes an aromatic caramel flavour. It is a snack widely enjoyed by adults and kids, as well as all-time popular Marshmallows that’s fluffy and chewy. Cotton and Pesticides

Cotton cultivation demands a large amount of pesticide, so much so that it is said to account for about a quarter of the world's pesticide use — growing cotton requires a lot of time and effort. It's not hard to imagine that all of that pesticide residue lingering in the soil can have major consequences on the growers, the animals, and the people who live nearby.

Materials That Are Wholesome for the Ones Who Make Them Too

At MUJI, we craft our products while upholding the spirit of "wholesome living." It wouldn't truly be wholesome living if the ones who produce the materials for the products we make are exposed to danger. We are dedicated to sustainable farming that is beneficial to the environment and producers. And so, we decided on using Organic Cotton — which is grown on soil that has not been treated with chemical fertilizers or pesticides for at least three years.

Manufacturing that Connects with the Growers

Still, organic cotton makes up less than 1% of all cotton produced; this is because the yield of organic cotton is only about 70% per planted area — compared to ordinary cotton grown using agrochemicals.

To solve this, we at MUJI have started many initiatives that take into consideration the impact on the environment, the farmers, the local people, and the ecosystem.

Learning about the process of producing organic cotton deepened our appreciation of the importance of the materials that go into crafting our products. And so, in 2014, our product developers visited farms around the world to experience hands-on sowing or harvesting — according to the season.

And So It Manifests

As the efforts came to fruition, by 2018, nearly all of the clothes we made were made using organic cotton — to the point that in 2019, we no longer needed to explicitly mention "Made with Organic Cotton" on our products.

To encourage organic cotton farming, in 2021, we launched an initiative providing farmers in India with two free seeds of organic cotton for every T-shirt sold.

And naturally, being implementers of organic cotton, we wish to keep up wholesome manufacturing that is beneficial to the growers and the buyers.
