The cultivation of cotton requires great amount of effort and time. In addition, the pesticides and chemical fertilizers used in cotton cultivation account for a quarter of the total worldwide usage, and a significant amount persists in the soil, bringing tremendous negative impacts to the natural environment, producers and locals living in the vicinity. Organic cotton refers to the cotton grown in soil that has remained free from the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers for more than 3 years, minimizing the impacts to environment and people.

Since 2014, our product development team has been visiting the production areas of organic cotton around the world, and experiencing sowing and harvesting processes across different seasons. As our product development continues, we strive to learn more about the production process of organic cotton, acquaint ourselves with how important these raw materials are, and maintain connections with the local producers. We were finally able to use organic cotton for all our cotton garments in 2018, and removed the labelling of “Organic Cotton” from our product names in 2019.

MUJI uses only organic cotton as the material for our cotton garments, and we will continue to create products which are simple but practical with consideration of the needs of users and producers in mind.
