What does MUJI mean to you?

For this week’s newsletter, allow me to introduce one of my all-time favourite MUJI products that holds a special place in my heart.

When I was 14, my parents sent my younger brother and me to boarding school in the UK.  It was a life-changing experience that taught me how to be independent. To guide me on this new chapter of my life, my father gave me a MUJI passport case.  “You are old enough to check-in by yourself at the airport now. And take care of your little brother.”, he said back then.

By now, that same passport case has accompanied me to more than 20 different countries over the past 15 years.  This was the very first MUJI product I ever obtained and it’s been with me for nearly half of my life.

To me, MUJI means durability, versatility and adaptability.

There are countless different ways you can use this passport case depending on your individual needs and preferences. As with many MUJI products, further adaptations are possible – in this case by adding or removing the clear pockets as you wish. The passport originally came with 3 clear pockets, but I added another 3:

Very often it’s the simple things that can go a long way. To me, this is not a mere passport case - it's a multipurpose case that can make life so much easier. Thanks to MUJI’s high quality, it stood the test of time and I hope to use for at least another 15 years.

【私の無印良品のストーリー】

こんにちは。

あなたにとって無印良品とはどんなイメージですか？


今週のお便りでは、無印良品の商品の中でお気に入りの一つであり、私にとっては特別な思い入れのある商品をご紹介します。




14歳の時、両親は弟と私をイギリスの寄宿学校に通わせてくれました。そこでは自立する方法を学ぶことができ、人生を変える経験ができました。
私の人生におけるこの新しい章のはじまりに、父が私にくれたのが無印良品のパスポートケースでした。 その時父からの「あなたは自分で空港にチェックインできる年齢になったんだよ。弟の世話もしてあげてね。」という言葉を今も覚えています。

今では、この同じパスポートケースを使って、過去15年間で20を超える国に行きました。これは、私が手にした最初の無印良品の商品であり、人生のほぼ半分の間を過ごした相棒です。
このパスポートケースとの出会いから私は無印良品に対して、耐久性、汎用性、適応性に優れているといったイメージを持つようになりました。

こちらが2005年版のパスポートケースで、私はすべての旅行書類とお金をこの中に保管しています。


そして、こちらが2020年に購入した最新版で、現在は1か月の家計管理をするために使用しています。




このように、個人のニーズや好みに応じて、このパスポートケースを使用する用途は無数にあります。多くの無印良品の商品と同様に、追加のカスタマイズが可能です。この例では、リフィルEVAケースを追加することで、パスポートケースには元々3つのポケットが付いていましたが、さらにポケットを3つ追加しています。




私にとって、これは単なるパスポートケースではありません。それは暮らしをより快適にすることができる多目的のケースです。長く使うことを考えたモノづくりだからこそ、私のパスポートケースはすでに15年もの期間を耐えています。少なくとも、あと15年間は使用したいと思っています。
