無印良品では、インナーをはじめとしたさまざまな商品にリヨセルを使用しています。リヨセルは、木材パルプからつくられる再生繊維で、なめらかな肌触りと吸湿性が特長です。

Lyocell fibers are used in a variety of MUJI goods, including innerwear. It’s a regenerated cellulose fiber made from wood pulp and is known for its smooth texture and moisture absorbency.

このリヨセルという再生繊維は、ポリエステルやナイロンなどの原油からつくられる合成繊維とは異なり、天然由来の原料からつくられています。

Whilst synthetic fibers, such as polyester and nylon, are derived from petroleum, Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber derived from natural raw materials.

無印良品がリヨセルを使う理由　Why MUJI uses Lyocell

無印良品はコットンやリネン、カポックといった天然素材を取り入れた商品を数多く取り揃えています。こうした天然素材と親和性があり、よりなめらかな肌触りの商品をラインナップに加えたいと考えた時、私たちが探し出したのがリヨセルでした。

MUJI offers a wide range of products made with natural materials, including cotton, linen, and kapok. When it came time to expand our lineup, we sought to select a fabric with a higher level of smoothness that would also complement the natural fibers we already offer, which is why we chose Lyocell.

天然素材が持つ吸湿性とポリエステルやナイロンといったお馴染みの合成繊維の特長であるなめらかさ、それぞれの良さを併せ持つのが、天然由来の原料を化学的に処理してつくられる再生繊維リヨセルだったからです。

Lyocell is a regenerated cellulose fiber made from chemically processed, natural raw materials. It combines the moisture-absorbency of natural materials with the smoothness of synthetic fibers, such as polyester and nylon.

一般的に、なめらかな手触りの生地が多い合成繊維は石油を主原料としているため、水を弾く疎水性の素材です。いわゆる水と油の関係で、その繊維は汗を吸収しにくい特性があります。一方で、天然由来のリヨセルは、もとが親水性の天然素材である木材パルプであるため、コットンのように汗を吸収します。

In general, synthetic fibers feel soft and smooth. Additionally, because they are primarily derived from petroleum, these fibers possess a hydrophobic quality that helps them to repel water. As oil and water don’t mix, synthetic fibers do not readily absorb perspiration or sweat. Lyocell, on the other hand, is made from wood pulp, a naturally hydrophilic material that absorbs sweat, similar to natural fibers such as cotton.

こうした理由から、無印良品では、直接肌に触れる商品に、なめらかで吸湿性のあるリヨセルを使用しているのです。

環境に配慮した原料調達と製造工程　Environmentally conscious sourcing and manufacturing

天然由来の原料を化学的に反応させ、作られる再生繊維にも様々な種類があります。なかでもリヨセルは、環境に配慮された原料調達と製造工程を備えているということが、選択における大切な要素でした。リヨセルの原料となる木材パルプは、適切に管理された森林で、その成長率とのバランスに配慮して伐採された木材から抽出されています。

There are many different types of regenerated cellulose fibers that can be produced via chemical reaction with natural raw materials. We chose Lyocell for its environmentally conscious sourcing practices and manufacturing processes. Lyocell is made from wood pulp harvested from well-managed forests―where special consideration is taken to maintain a sustainable growth rate.

無印良品が扱うリヨセルは、その製造についても環境負荷に気を配った工程を経ています。木材パルプから繊維になるまでには化学的な処理が施されますが、リヨセルは、この工程を「クローズドループ」と呼ばれる製法で行なっています。つまり、木材パルプを処理する溶剤や水を99%を超える回収率で再利用し、工場内で循環させているのです。

MUJI uses Lyocell that is manufactured in a way that takes into account its environmental impact. Wood pulp is chemically treated, before being transformed into fiber and undergoes this process in a “closed loop”, meaning more than 99% of the water and solvents used in its the manufacturing process are recovered and reused.

天然由来のなめらかさと吸湿性を持ち、環境へも配慮した責任ある材料調達と製造工程をもつリヨセルを、無印良品はこれからも活用していきたいと考えています。

With its natural smoothness, high moisture absorbency, and environmentally conscious sourcing and manufacturing, MUJI will continue to use Lyocell in a wide range of products.
