人と羊との長い歴史　The Long History Between Humans and Sheep

人と羊のつきあいは、1万年ほど前まで遡ることができると言われています。その長い歴史の中で、人々は愛情をかけて羊を育て、その見返りに羊毛を得てきました。やがてメリノ種という上質な毛を持つ羊が誕生します。

It’s said the relationship between humans and sheep dates back approximately 10,000 years. Throughout this long history, people have raised sheep with care and in return, received wool. Over time emerged the Merino breed, prized for its fine, high-quality wool.

この種の羊から採れるメリノウールは、なめらかな肌ざわりと、吸湿速乾性をはじめとした様々な機能性を持った特別な天然素材として世界に広まりました。

Merino wool spread across the world thanks to its smooth texture and functional properties, particularly its ability to absorb moisture and dry quickly.

このメリノウールを与えてくれる羊たちは、どのように育てられているのでしょうか。私たちは、産地のひとつであるオーストラリアのニューサウスウェールズ州・アーミデールを訪ねました。

How are the sheep that produce this precious Merino wool raised? We visited Armidale in New South Wales, Australia, a region renowned for its production of Merino wool.

大切に育まれる羊たち　Caring for our sheep

ニューサウスウェールズ州は大陸の南東部に位置し、アーミデールはその中でもニューイングランド地方に属します。このエリアは丘陵地のため、しっかりと寒暖差があり、羊を育てるのに適した場所です。

Located in the southeastern part of the continent, Armidale is part of the New England region, an area with hilly terrain and temperature fluctuations that make it an ideal place to raise sheep.

緩やかな起伏を持つ広大な牧場に目を凝らすと、群れをなした羊たちがそこかしこで自由に草を食んでいます。草原の中には木立や森が点在し、涼しげな木陰で居眠りしている羊たちも見えました。

From the expansive, gently rolling pastures, flocks of sheep graze freely across the landscape. The meadows are dotted with groves and forests, and sheep can be seen sleeping under the cool shade of the trees.

牧場の管理をしているご夫妻が、牧羊犬に的確な合図を送りながら羊たちを集めてくれます。人と犬と羊たちが、まるで魔法のように一体になってゆくのは驚くような光景です。「羊たちは良き隣人です。こちらが愛情を注げば、良質なウールでお返ししてくれます」と話してくれたのは、この土地に魅せられて住み込みで牧場管理をするマットさんです。

The couple who manage the farm gather the sheep by giving precise signals to their herding dog. It's an amazing sight to behold; man, dog, and sheep becoming one, as if by magic. “The sheep are good neighbors,” says Matt, who lives on the land and helps manage the farm. “If we treat them with love, they return that kindness with high-quality wool.”

この牧場の羊は、虫の寄生を避けるためにお尻の肉を切除するミュールジングを行っていません。その分、衛生状況をこまめにチェックするなどの手間はかかりますが、羊の健康と良質なメリノウールの生産を両立するために誇りを持って取り組んでいるそうです。無印良品は、ミュールジングをせずに育てられた羊の毛だけを調達しています。

The sheep on the farm aren’t subject to ‘mulesing’, a practice that involves the removal of skin from the hindquarters to prevent parasites. Although this requires greater time and effort, with more diligent health checks and maintenance, the farmers here take pride in their efforts to protect the sheep’s well-being, whilst producing premium, high-quality Merino wool. Muji sources wool exclusively from mulesing-free sheep.

自然が生んだ機能性素材　Nature’s functional material

こうして大事に育てられた羊の毛は、暑い夏が来る前に優しく刈り取られたのち、厳格な品質チェックを経て紡績されます。背中の細く長い毛は上質な梳毛（そもう）紡績にまわり、無印良品ではハイゲージのセーターなどに用いています。一方、脚やお腹の短い毛も無駄にせず、紡毛（ぼうもう）紡績を経てミドルゲージのセーターなどに活用しています。

The wool from these carefully raised sheep is gently shorn before the hot summer arrives and is spun only after it has undergone a rigorous quality check. The long, fine fibers along the back of the sheep are used for high-quality carded wool, which MUJI uses to produce fine-gauge sweaters and other products. While the shorter fibers from the legs and belly are also utilized and are spun into medium-gauge yarns for other clothing items, leaving nothing to waste.

メリノウールは繊維が非常に細いため、一般的なウールの印象と違ってとてもなめらかで、チクチクしにくい素材です。また、繊維の表面にあるスケールと呼ばれる鱗が開いたり閉じたりすることによって、吸湿や放湿を自然に行ってくれます。そして、クリンプと呼ばれる細かな縮れが空気を含むことで、冬は暖かさを保つことができます。

Thanks to its ultra-fine fibers, Merino wool is exceptionally smooth and less prickly than typical wool. Its surface fibers, called scales, open and close, allowing the wool to naturally absorb and release moisture. And the fine wave-like pattern in the fibers, called crimps, traps air, keeping the fabric warm in winter and cool in summer.
